27. Dump your junk

It’s not just fat that most of acquire as we grow older, it’s possessions, too. Clear out the clutter and make room for love.

How will sifting through the contents of the spare bedroom improve your relationship? Aren’t there better ways of spending time together? We’ll show how sorting, saving, storing or selling saves relationships.

Clutter costs you and your relationship more than you can afford. Do you like to keep stuff? Is your home disorganized? Like poison ivy, clutter takes over, obscuring and stifling. Untidiness makes us frustrated and puts stress on relationships. It’s also a massive time waster. It’ll sap your passion and drain away intimacy. But we’re no minimalists. Where would we be without the lawn mower, electric drill, bread maker or computer? Problems come when we hang on to so much clutter that we can’t find things we need, don’t feel we have room to move and waste hours each week trying to find things.

Laura and Jean-Claude used to spend about twenty minutes each morning hunting for the house and car keys before heading off to work, each minute increasing the likelihood of getting snared in traffic. They started their days tense and sniping, and that was the good bit. A key hook changed their lives.

Jake works while Katherine is a full-time homemaker. You don’t have to spend too much time in their home before overhearing remarks like ‘Why do you always hide my diary?’ and charged questions like ‘Where did you put my shoes this time?’ By itself, each question may be small, but each is a little brick. Over time, the bricks will build up into a wall that will prevent good communication and goodwill from getting through. Find a home for the diary and invest in a shoerack, and walls like these will never be built.

Rolling up your sleeves and sorting out you attic, cellar, flat, lounge, shed or garage probably isn’t your idea of spending quality time together. We’d all like some little elves to visit at night and rummage through that pile of lecture notes, go through those tins of wall paint or sift through the records, weeding out the albums you know you’ll never listen to again.

What, no elves? You need four big receptacles – bin liners, boxes, shopping trolleys or whatever you have handy. Label them: rubbish, recycling, charity shop and repair. As you sort through your stuff, either put it away, find a home for it or sling it into one of these containers. Save oodles of time by only touching each item once. You can confer; indeed, we’d urge you to ask your partner what he wants done with his squash racquet. If he has to buy it back from the charity shop, it might put the wrong sort of bounce back into your relationship.

As you peruse your bits and pieces, you’re bound to be reminded about old times together. By all means reminisce and share your happy memories, but don’t hang on to that old poster-size photo of your ex-husband for so-called sentimental reasons.
